Windows 8/8.1 does not have a standard Start menu that most users are accustomed too. Microsoft developed their new “Tiles” Start menu would allow users to quickly navigate to programs they frequently use.
Cause
This however has been met with sharp criticism by users so a software developer (Ivo Beltchev) developed Classic Shell to put that functionality back.
Solution
Install Classic Shell by following the instructions below:
- Download the latest version of Classic Shell here
- Run the installer
- Click Next
- Select I accept the terms in the License Agreement and click Next
- Click Next
- Click Install
- If the User Account Control asks “Do you want to allow the following program to install software on this computer?” click Yes
- Click Finish
Setup Classic Shell
- Download the Start button image here
- Click Start
- Select Windows 7 style for the Start menu
- Check Replace Start button
- Select Custom
- Click Pick image
- Navigate to and select the file you downloaded in step 1
- Click Open
- Click OK
